21 Savage dreads not only form a huge part of his personal style but are a result of the Hip Hop culture in Atlanta.

This would explain why most rappers with dreads come from the southern regions as opposed to the east and west! Young thug, Gunna and lil baby dreads all being great examples of this.

Since his debut we have witnessed his dreadlock growth journey in real time which we have documented for you along with a gallery.

How & When did 21 Savage Dreads start?

How: The formation of his dreadlocks were started using the sponge method on his high-top hairstyle.

This involved using a sponge or towel and rotating it across his afro textured hair to create twists. He also regularly keeps the sides shaved to maintain the high top dreads look, however due to their length they now cover his sides.

When: 21 Savage began his dreadlocks in 2016 as we can see from the images above. To date he has been growing his hair for over 6 years.

Detailed Look

To further emphasize our point above we have linked a video from great locs who looks at the foundation of his hair and how his dreads were formed.

High Top Afro

Prior to the 21 Savage were all privy to today this all started with the high-top afro which he sported throughout the initial phase of his career.

This would also be the foundation for his dreads as he kept the sides shaven whilst changing the top of his hair to twists.

Sponge Twists

From the images we have of 21 Savage around 2016 to 2017 we can see the first stage taking place which were his twists being created by a sponge or towel.

Due to his hair type being 4B it naturally has a tighter coil pattern allowing for it to mature and lock faster which would explain his dreads fast maturity and growth.

Matured

18 months into the journey and we began to see his dreads mature and healthy. What’s even more interesting is that 21 savage dreads are never really styled.

He makes a conscious effort to leave his dreads as they are without the need to place them in protective styles or colour.

Current Look

It should be evident at this point that 21 Savage regularly trims the ends of his hair and we know this by his length!

In the 6+ years of his hair growth his dreads have not passed his shoulders which is uncommon for this hairstyle!

Whilst dreads don’t grow faster than a person without them it would appear this way due to the lengths they can achieve as majority of shredded hair stays within the dread.

Outside of this his hair is healthy, thick, and continuously undergoing a maintenance routine to achieve this look.

Do your research if you want similar Dreads

While there is a lot of conflicting information with regards to dreadlocks, we still advise you to do research. The most important things at the initial stage will be to watch videos online and make notes of the peoples dreads you admire.

We should also mention that its best you avoid placing any colour or bleach in your hair for the first few months as your hair begins to develop.

Remember if you want similar dreads to 21 savage you will need to start them off as a high top. Shaven sides with twists at the top, then they should be left to naturally form as they please.

Talk to a loctician and get a Consultation

Talking to a loctician is our best advise! They are the professionals who live and breathe hair.

During the consultations locitians will be able to have a closer look at your hair type, discussion process, hair products to use and avoid and parting systems.

Ensure you save the images of your desired style to your loctician and explain what you’re looking for.
