The Atlanta Hip Hop scene has a huge representation of rappers with dreads due to this being an immense part of their culture which would explain why Lil baby dreads shortly began after his fame and notoriety.

From the Migos, Future, 2 Chainz to 21 Savage dreadlocks are clearly a way of life for ATL rappers today and the influence is clear to see.

As one of the leading contemporary rappers a great amount of interest has been placed on Lil baby’s dreads which we are going to cover in great detail.

How and when did Lil Baby Dreads start

Lil Baby Dreads throughout the years

How: Images of Lil Baby at the start of his dreadlock journey show his afro twisted by the sponge method and whilst his hair type is a 4C it naturally has a tighter coil pattern allowing for it to mature and lock faster.

No uniform look or section is proof his hair was twisted by the sponge.

When: Summer of 2019 we began to see Lil Baby begin his dreadlock journey. To date he has been growing his hair for over 3 years which would explain his length and maturity.

Lil Baby Dreads throughout the years

2019

Its well documented that Lil Baby began his dreadlocks in the summer of 2019. Prior to this the rapper predominately had his hair in afro twists.

He would often shave the sides with a gradual taper fade, this would be the foundation for his dreadlocks.

2020

With only a year into his dreadlock journey we began to see his dreads form and gain length.

He also began putting his dreads in protective styles during the first year and whilst this is possible, we advise you allow your hair to grow without styling it for the first few months.

Cornrows

Today we can see Lil Baby’s dreads in multiple cornrow patterns such as traditional and side cornrows.

These styles each offering a unique look and something he continued to do throughout his career.

His front taper fade becomes more apparent as he pulls his hair back and away from his face.

Twist Out

When he’s in between retwists, we will see Lil Baby’s hair in a curly twist out which is the result of his protective hairstyles being unravelled.

This is one of the benefits that comes from having dreadlocks and a style that can be rocked until wash day!

Curl rods can also help you achieve this look if you currently don’t have a protective style placed in your hair.

Pineapple Top

Pineapple dreads or high-top dreads are achieved in multiple ways with the most common being the front few dreads are braided to the scalp until the middle and then tied up or all dreads are pulled towards the centre and then wrapped around.

It continues to be a go to style popular in the dreadlock community and one Lil Baby wears as an alternative to dreaded cornrows.

Do your research if you want similar Dreads

While there is a lot of conflicting information with regards to dreadlocks, we still advise you to do research. The most important things at the initial stage will be to watch videos online and make notes of the peoples dreads you admire.

We should also mention that its best you avoid placing any colour or bleach in your hair for the first few months as your hair begins to develop.

Talk to a loctician and get a Consultation

Whilst we know freeform dreads don’t require much to start as a simple sponge twist and leaving them can begin the process, we still advise you speak to a professional who will access the health of your hair and wash if nothing else.

During the consultations locitians will be able to have a closer look at your hair type, discuss the freeform process, products to use and avoid.

Ensure you save the images of your desired style to your loctician and explain what you’re looking for.
