We have placed the first 3 images in stages of his hair journey
Comb Coils (Stage 1)
Back in the summer of 2017 Lil Durk started his 2nd set of locks with the comb coil method. Comb Coils is one of the most popular methods used to start dreads.
His loctician sectioned his hair with the use of a comb to tightly coil his hair which would be the foundation of his hair as well as his parting system.
His dreads quickly began to mature and matt together.
Starter Dreads (Stage 2)
With the foundation set his dreads were free to begin to grow and form. During the starter dreads phase Lil Durk dreads were not bleached or coloured and allowed for a healthy foundation.
Whilst dreads can be bleached at any stage its always advise to wait until a year in which is what Lil Durk did. All images of Lil Durk feature his natural hair colour between 2017 and 2018.
Blonde Dreads (Stage 3)
Having done some research on Getty Images we can see the first time Lil Durk debuted his blonde dreads was back in Feb 2019!
A bold move whilst also an influential one since we have gone on to see multiple rappers style their hair this way.
Since then we have seen Lil Durk continuously bleach his hair this colour which has become his signature look.
Due to the contrast blonde makes against black and brown skin it allows the colour to pop more which we believe is the reason Durk coloured his hair and we love it!
2 Strand Twists
Durk can be credited for helping to popularise this hairstyle within Hip Hop having made this a trademark look since regrowing his hair.
The no tension hairstyle is a great protective style which is often worn for weeks before needing a retwist.
Disclaimer: It should be noted that once hair is placed in a 2 strand twist hair will become shorter since its being wrapped around itself. His true length is when his hair is out of the twists.
3 Strand Twists
Similar in appearance to the 2 strand twist with the difference being the style requires 3 separate dreads to form a braided look and Durk continuously alternates between 2 and 3 strand twists.
His dreads appear much thicker when grouped together this way and something hes done throughout the last few years.
Twist Out
Whether it be 2 strand twists, cornrows or braids it all results in the twist out which Lil Durk takes advantage off.
As his hair is constantly placed in protective styles once hair is unravelled then it creates a curly hair pattern which Lil Durk can often time be seen in.
Lil Durk Dreads in Cornrows
Whilst this is a rare style for him we have seen Lil Durk dreads braided flat to his scalp which creates the cornrow look.
The benefit is that it allows for hats and headscarf’s to be worn easily since hair is down whilst allow creating less facial interference since dreads are not in the way during physical activity which is why he uses the style once playing sports or any other high level activity.
Wicks
At the start of 2023 Lil Durk Dreads transitioned from traditional locs to wicks which we can see from the images.
In order to achieve this he used a Crochet Hook on his existing dreads and merged 2 to 3 dreads in which he intertwined them together to create thicker sets of dreads.
The difference in volume from his most recent changes and his past hairstyle is clear to see.
Kodak Black dreads can be credited for popularizing the hairstyle in Hip Hop as it derives from Florida in which Kodak is from.
Do your research if you want similar Dreads
While there is a lot of conflicting information with regards to dreadlocks, we still advise you to do research. The most important things at the initial stage will be to watch videos online and make notes of the peoples dreads you admire.
We should also mention that its best you avoid placing any colour or bleach in your hair for the first few months as your hair begins to develop.
Talk to a loctician and get a Consultation
Talking to a loctician is our best advise! They are the professionals who live and breathe hair.
During the consultations locitians will be able to have a closer look at your hair type, discussion process, hair products to use and avoid and parting systems.
Ensure you save the images of your desired style to your loctician and explain what you’re looking for.
