A police dog has received praise for helping recapture a murderer who broke out of prison.

Danelo Cavalcante fled Chester County Prison in Pennsylvania and remained at large for two weeks.

Authorities faced intense criticism as days passed with little sign of progress.

Cavalcante reportedly even took a firearm from a property earlier in the search before vanishing again.

The K-9 credited with ending the manhunt is named Yoda.

Yoda is a four-year-old Belgian Malinois assigned to the El Paso Border Patrol Tactical Team BORTAC, one of several teams that joined the search.

Lieutenant Colonel Bivens said a police aircraft detected a heat signature at about 1am on 13 September.

Bad weather forced officers to delay the response until later that day.

When they returned, Yoda located the 34-year-old fugitive, chasing him as he tried to crawl away.

A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said: “U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been supporting our federal, state, and local partners during this intense 14-day search.

“On Wednesday morning, Sept. 13, members of the United States Border Patrol, including elite BORTAC unit agents, together with our partners at the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and other federal, state and local law enforcement, apprehended escaped prisoner Danelo Cavalcante without incident.”

A photograph from the scene shows Cavalcante with his face covered in blood while officers led him away.

He was armed with a rifle at the moment of capture.

At a news conference, Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said: “Today is a great day in Chester County. Our nightmare is finally over.

“We have the best people in the business and we knew it was just a matter of time.”

Ryan added that bringing the case to a close would offer some comfort to the family of Deborah Brandao, whom Cavalcante was convicted of murdering.

“They can now finally sleep again,” Ryan said.

Court documents state Cavalcante faces charges for escaping prison and is due before court on 27 September.

On X, Gov. Josh Shapiro wrote: “Thanks to incredible work of @PAStatePolice, local authorities, federal partners, and the people of ChesCo, Danelo Cavalcante is in police custody.

“These dedicated law enforcement professionals worked tirelessly to protect us, and I couldn’t be prouder to work alongside them.”
