The decomposed remains of Marinella Beretta, a 70-year-old woman, were tragically found in her home two years after her passing, raising questions about isolation and elderly care in Italy.
Last Seen in 2019
Marinella Beretta, who lived near Lake Como in Lombardy, was last seen by her neighbors in September 2019.

After that, her absence went unnoticed.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, neighbors assumed that Beretta had moved away, as the region of northern Italy was severely impacted by lockdowns and restrictions. Unfortunately, her prolonged absence masked a much sadder reality.
Discovery of Her Remains
On February 4, 2022, firefighters were called to Beretta’s residence after complaints about an overgrown and dangerous garden.
High winds had knocked down a tree in her yard, prompting local authorities to check on the property. Upon entering the home, they discovered Beretta’s body, sitting at a table in her living room. The extent of the decomposition indicated she had died toward the end of 2019, according to the medical examiner.

No Signs of Foul Play
Police found no evidence of foul play or criminal activity at the scene.
The conclusion drawn was that Beretta had passed away due to natural causes, her death going unnoticed for two years. Neighbors’ assumptions that she had left during the early pandemic meant no one had checked on her, highlighting a tragic gap in elderly care.
A Call for Better Elderly Care
The discovery sparked a national conversation in Italy about the isolation faced by many elderly people.
Elena Bonetti, Italy’s Minister for Family and Equal Opportunities, expressed sorrow at Beretta’s lonely death. In a Facebook post, Bonetti wrote, “Her forgotten loneliness weighs on our consciences… Taking care of each other must be a priority for families, institutions, and citizens alike. No one should be left behind.”
The Community Response
Como’s mayor, Mario Landriscina, called for the community to come together and attend Beretta’s funeral, which was arranged by the local government.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing her passing as a moment for reflection on society’s responsibility to its most vulnerable members. Landriscina stated, “Though she had no known relatives, we, as a community, can become her family.”
Beretta’s death, isolated and unnoticed for so long, has served as a sobering reminder of the risks many elderly individuals face when left alone, and the importance of social support systems during and beyond times of crisis.
