Tom Cruise has been permanently banned from ever buying a Bugatti

“Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to buy a Bugatti.”

This would have been one of the milder missions for Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible.

But for Cruise personally, it would be surprisingly difficult.

He can afford one. His estimated net worth sits at about $600 million.

Despite the cash, Cruise cannot buy a Bugatti because the company has barred him for life.

That matters more than it might for an ordinary brand. Bugatti ranks among the world’s top carmakers.

The French firm builds some of the fastest road cars and enforces strict owner rules.

Owners typically face around $21,000 in annual maintenance costs.

They are also advised to replace tires every 10,000 miles.

Bugattis themselves range in price from roughly $3 million to $12.5 million, according to MotorTrend.

The price tag isn’t what prevents Cruise from buying one.

His ban traces back to an incident in 2006.

At the premiere of Mission: Impossible 3, cameras caught Cruise struggling to open the passenger door of his Bugatti Veyron.

Katie Holmes, his then-wife, sat inside while he fumbled with the door.

Holmes did step out and join the red carpet eventually.

But the public slip-up embarrassed Bugatti enough to ban him forever.

He’s not the only celebrity on Bugatti’s blacklist.

Other figures reportedly barred from buying Bugattis include Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, Flo Rida, Simon Cowell, and Jenson Button — the 2009 Formula One World Champion.

Thankfully for Cruise, he still collects other prestige cars.

His garage has held BMWs, Chevrolets and Mustangs at various times.
