Thai hospital fined US$37,000 after patient records used as street food wrappers

A Thai hospital was fined 1.21 million baht (US$37,000) after patient medical records were discovered being used as street food wrappers.

An online influencer exposed the incident by posting images of the documents used as bags for a crispy crepe called khanom Tokyo.

The hospital involved was a private facility in Ubon Ratchathani province, in northeastern Thailand.

The influencer, whose name is translated as Doctor Lab Panda, said patient details were visible on the wrapper.

One sheet clearly showed it belonged to a man infected with the hepatitis B virus.

“Should I continue eating it, or is this enough?”

The post drew 33,000 reactions and 1,700 comments, and it went viral.

The post was published in May 2024.

On August 1, the government’s Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) reported it had imposed a penalty of 1.21 million baht on the hospital for breaching data laws.
