Forming 1/3 of the Hip Hop group Migos, Takeoff dreads are the most unique and distinctive due to their thickness and length.

Outside of his rap group his long locks make him one of the rappers with dreads today with the longest length.

Our editorial will cover his dreads in detail, his signature look as well as the impact of his hair in Hip Hop culture.

How & When did Takeoff Dreads Start?

How:

Takeoff dreads were started with the traditional twist and gel method. Growing out his afro in the late 2000s and then twisting it would set his foundation. Today he can be seen styling his dreads in braids as a protective style.

When:

From our research we believe Takeoff began his dreads journey around 2008! Videos of the Migos dating back as far as 2012 features Takeoff already having thick dreads at shoulder length.

Why:

For the same reason all the Migos have dreads! To fit the group aesthetic!

We were first introduced to the Migos back in 2013 which featured Takeoff, Offset and Quavo. Both Takeoff and Quavo had dreads at the time which would influence the growth off offset dreads in the coming years.

Over the years it became apparent to us that Takeoff does not bleach his hair, nor does he do multiple styles. He keeps it simple with box braids and twist outs, check out our gallery below

Box Braids (Signature Look)

With his dreads now at full length and maturity he continues to style his hair in box braids which involves the use of 3 individual locks intertwined with each other and then tied with a rubber band.

Music videos, interviews, award shows and any other public appearance you can count on him to rock the braids!

Twist Outs

When he’s not rocking his braids which is very rare, we can see take off in his twist out which is created due to the unravelling of his braids.

The beauty of the box braids is that they can stay intact for 6 weeks! Afterwards they will need to be washed, once you remove your hair from braids you will see the curls!

Do your research if you want similar Dreads

While there is a lot of conflicting information with regards to dreadlocks, we still advise you to do research. The most important things at the initial stage will be to watch videos online and make notes of the peoples dreads you admire.

We should also mention that its best you avoid placing any colour or bleach in your hair for the first few months as your hair begins to develop.

Talk to a loctician and get a Consultation

Talking to a loctician is our best advise! They are the professionals who live and breathe hair.

During the consultations locitians will be able to have a closer look at your hair type, discussion process, hair products to use and avoid and parting systems.

Ensure you save the images of your desired style to your loctician and explain what you’re looking for.
