Packing for a trip can be stressful, and a new study confirms what many travelers already know: most women overpack their suitcases by nearly double.

For a one-week trip, women often pack around 60 clothing items but end up using only about half of them.

The rest just take up space, add weight, and sometimes even cost extra at the airport.

In fact, nearly one in five women admit paying baggage fees because of overpacking.

Why does this happen? The most common reason is the “just in case” mindset.

Travelers want to be ready for unexpected events, sudden weather changes, or social plans.

That means extra shoes, backup dresses, or outfits that never leave the suitcase.

Overpacking may feel safe, but it comes with problems.

Heavy bags are harder to carry, increase travel stress, and lead to unnecessary costs.

It also means wasting time sorting through clothes you’ll never wear.

The study found that 72% of women admit they always pack more than they need.

Many laugh about it, but airlines aren’t laughing when they charge fees.

Some travelers even confessed they didn’t wear a single “just in case” item, proving the fear of underpacking was mostly in their heads.

Travel experts suggest a few fixes: stick to a capsule wardrobe with items that can be mixed and matched, limit shoes, and lay out everything first before cutting it down by a third.

Choosing neutral colors and versatile pieces makes it easier to travel lighter without feeling underprepared.

Overpacking may be common, but it’s avoidable.

The next time you zip up your suitcase, ask yourself: do I really need all this? Chances are, half of it can stay home.
