The 36-year-old Saudi prince has died after spending two decades in a coma.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was involved in a severe car crash in London in 2005.

The collision caused major brain trauma and internal bleeding while he was a teenager.

He received emergency care but never regained consciousness.

The prince remained on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Saudi Arabia for the last 20 years.

Because of his prolonged coma, he was often called the ‘Sleeping Prince’.

After twenty years on life support, Prince Al-Waleed has now passed away.

It was announced yesterday (July 19) in a statement from his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud.

Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud never gave up on his son.

“With hearts believing in Allah will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today.”

His last recorded signs of movement came in 2019.

Roya News reported he briefly lifted a finger and slightly moved his head.

‘He showed signs of limited awareness through small gestures, such as lifting a finger or slightly moving his head—though these moments did not indicate a return to full consciousness’.

People have shared condolences across social media.

The Global Imams Council offered formal condolences.

“The Global Imams Council extends its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Adbulaziz, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the esteemed Royal Family, on the passing of His Royal Highness Pirnce Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, who passed away after a long struggle that lasted nearly twenty years following a tragic accident.”

Others wrote short tributes online.

“May Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled, Rest In Peace. Deepest sympathies to his loved ones.”

“Your time on earth was a blessing to your family and the world in general.”

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Funeral prayers are expected to take place at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
