A retail tycoon in China has rolled out an “unhappy leave” policy to help employees find a better work-life balance.
During 2024’s China Supermarket Week in late March, Yu Donglai announced the plan.

Yu is the founder and chairman of Pang Dong Lai, a retail chain in central Henan province.
He said employees could request an extra 10 days of leave at their own discretion.
10 days of additional leave will be available for staff to use as they see fit.
The conference is a six-day gathering aimed at promoting the supermarket sector in China.
“I want every staff member to have freedom. Everyone has times when they’re not happy, so if you’re not happy, do not come to work,” Yu said.

Yu wants employees to choose their own rest periods.
He also emphasized they should have enough time to relax outside work.
“This leave cannot be denied by management. Denial is a violation,” he said.
The policy is meant to give staff autonomy over taking time off when they feel unhappy.
