Cornrows

Cornrows being a great protective style for players has been worn on the likes of Marcus Smart amongst others.

What’s even more interesting is the creative thought behind some of his designs, for example back in 2019 he had his jersey number as well as the Celtics logo braided into his head. This was done to communicate his support and loyalty to the team.

Similar past examples of this can be seen in the 90s when the Chicago Bulls logo was shaved and dyed into Dennis Rodman’s hair.

Off scalp Braids

Outside of his signature cornrows he can be seen in his off-scalp braids. A minor detail he adds to this style is the blue rubber bands at the tips.

Off scalp Braids

In addition to off scalp braids, he is also known for styling his hair in twists.

Both styles similar in appearance with the subtle difference being the off-scalp braids use 3 strands of hair intertwined with each other creating a braided look while twists use 2 strands of hair wrapped around each other giving it a ropey look.

Afro blowouts

To the untrained eye this may just be a hairstyle and while this may be the case there are also practical reasons for this.

With the athlete constantly having his hair in braids a break is necessary to allow the scalp to breathe.

Braids, twists and any other protective style means constant pulling on your edges, hairline and which can lead to breakage and scalp irritation. Breaks to your hair is necessary and a practice done by all athletes with long hair.

Dyed Hair

Our archives show 2 phases of Marcus Smarts career in which he has dyed his hair.

  1. Blonde Dreadlocks

The bright blonde tips were placed on top while countered by his darker hair beneath on the sides and back of his head.

He has since removed his dreads and reverted into loose hair which he styles in braids today.

  1. Green Tips on Afro

Using a very light green dye we have also seen Marcus more recently use green at the tips of his hair. This is more apparent when he decides to twist his hair.

Why the colour green? This is the Boston Celtics main colour!

Buzz Cut

As a rookie we saw the athlete in his relatively low hairstyle before he began to experiment with all different types of hairstyles.

A common theme that tends to appear with new athletes signed to the NBA is their short hair within their rookie year. As they integrate within the team and find their feet its almost certain new hairstyles emerge.

That is unless your Michael Jordan, starting out a rookie with hair and leave the greatest to ever do it, bald!

We should mention that hair is secondary in all cases! Talent always comes first.
