A 22-year-old fake dentist and two assistants have been charged by Czech police after they treated dozens of patients following instructions found online.

Police say the three family members set up an unlicensed surgery in their home in Havlickuv Brod about two years ago.

They treated patients despite lacking the necessary professional knowledge, officials added.

Investigators say the 22-year-old removed teeth, carried out complex root canals and administered anaesthesia, relying on information he had found online.

All three have pleaded guilty to several charges, and face up to eight years in prison, police said.

Police did not say whether any patients had complained about the treatment.

The three include a 50-year-old woman who worked as a nurse, and a 44-year-old man who made prosthetic devices.

Authorities said the illegal clinic treated dozens of people and took 4 million Czech koruna (£137,827, $185,500).

“The woman, who worked in the health sector, provided anaesthetics but also other dental material to which she had access, such as fillings, cleaning powder, glue, impression material and much more,” police said in a statement.

“A 22-year-old man posed as a dentist, although he lacked the necessary professional knowledge.”

Police spokeswoman Michaela Lebrova declined to say whether the force was acting on patient complaints.

All three were arrested earlier this month, and charged this week with operating an illegal business, money laundering, attempted assault, drug dealing and theft.

Police said all have pleaded guilty.

Roman Šmucler, president of the Czech dental chamber, said the country sees about 10 fake dentist cases a year on average.

“I have two more submissions today, so today there are three cases in the Czech Republic,” Šmucler told Radiožurnál.

The Czech parliament last year approved a bill making it easier to employ dentists from countries outside the EU.
