Christmas as we know it is reserved for the likes of Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé & Frank Sinatra who’s music becomes the soundtrack during the holidays and while its tradition for these artists to dominate the festive season Christmas rap songs offers a different spin to music during this period.

While were used to cheerful melodic songs during this period Hip Hop keeps its tradition by rapping over beats while keeping the theme festive. A perfect example of this can be seen in the first Christmas rap song by Kurtis Blow in 1976.

Since the first Christmas rap tune in 1976 we have gone on to see countless number of rappers attempt to create festive music and we have listed some of the best ones for you to enjoy during the holidays!

Christmas In Hollis – Run DMC

During 1986 Run DMC participated in a charity album for Christmas and the group were asked to story tell from the perspective of Christmas in Hollis Queens!

This song would go on to becoming one of the biggest festive songs in Hip Hop music with a video to further support the lyrics by showing the group together in their neighbourhood.

Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto – Snoop Dog

While a lot of controversy surrounded Death Row Records during the 90s the label made efforts to re-establish themselves showing community support which resulted in the release of the compilation album, Christmas at Death row with Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto as the first single.

In true G-Funk style Nate Dog provides the smooth g funk hook & Snoop delivers gifts to the community depicting himself as Black Santa with the help of the dog pound.

Ballin’ on X-Mas – Jim Jones ft Dipset

The dips jump on the classic RUN DMC song Christmas In Hollis in which stacks provides a dope hook as Jim raps about the added pressure being a hustler during the festive season and street life.

The late Stack Bundles demonstrates much charisma on his verse as he’s able to be witty about dealing drugs, getting women, and maintaining his cool status all within a Christmas track! Now that’s talent!

Christmas in Harlem – Kanye West

One of the most memorable songs Kanye released in 2010 during the Good Fridays run goes to Christmas in Harlem. Teyana Taylor’s vocal provides an uplifting joyful feeling which is suitable to be played at Christmas every year!

Gucci Mane or as he likes to call himself during the festive season East Atlanta Santa released the hard-hitting Christmas rap song Jingle Bales produced by J White. What really makes the song stand out is the visuals that shows Gucci parading through New York City crashing Santacon!

The Godfather of West Coast gangster rap Eazy E provides us with a Christmas parody rap song in which the MC celebrates his Christmas gift by receiving head from a woman!

The songs freaky, explicit & the exact opposite of what you expect from a Christmas song, yet we still love it! Play this one when the kids have gone to bed!

Kurtis Blows tells the story of Santa delivering presents in the neighbourhood and stopping by to join the party before he set off. In true Christmas spirit the song is a great record for the festive season which went onto becoming a commercial hit!

While this does not fall under the official Christmas rap songs, what’s there not to love about DMX acapella Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer!
