Christian Bale has long been known for his jaw-dropping physical transformations, but one role pushed him to the very edge of human endurance. The actor lost more than a third of his body weight to star in The Machinist, a 2004 psychological thriller released just months before he bulked up to play Batman.
The movie, which holds an IMDb rating of 7.6, follows Trevor Reznik, an industrial worker plagued by insomnia and paranoia. To embody the role, Bale slimmed down to a shocking 110 pounds—dropping 63 pounds from his normal 173-pound frame.

“You’ve abandoned your body”
Speaking to The Guardian, Bale recalled the surreal state he entered during the extreme diet.
“It’s an amazing experience doing that. When you’re so skinny that you can hardly walk up a flight of stairs, you’re like this being of pure thought. It’s like you’ve abandoned your body. That’s the most Zen-like state I’ve ever been in my life.”
He added that the deprivation left him unusually calm, with no emotional highs or lows:
“Two hours sleep, reading a book for 10 hours straight without stopping; unbelievable. You couldn’t rile me up. No rollercoaster of emotions.”
But as soon as Bale began eating again, he said the “rollercoaster” of human emotion returned.
What he ate—and what he gave up
Bale’s daily diet for four months consisted of:
- One apple
- One tin of tuna
- A cup of black coffee
- Occasionally, some whiskey
The meager routine meant sacrificing his social life entirely.
“I’d do a bit of eating hardly anything and losing 51 pounds, and then I’d put on 7 pounds bingeing one night because I’d have a couple of drinks. So I decided no more social life, no more friends, no more dinners, no more drinks.”

From emaciated to Batman bulk
When filming wrapped on The Machinist, Bale had little time to recover. Batman Begins was set to start production just months later, and he needed to transform from skeletal to superhero.
He immediately began gorging on pizza, ice cream, and massive meals. Against doctors’ advice to start slowly with soups, Bale jumped straight into five heavy meals a day—an approach that left him violently ill at first. Still, he managed to rebuild his body into the muscular Dark Knight fans now remember as one of the most iconic portrayals of Batman ever.
Dedication to the craft
While most people wouldn’t risk their health for a role, Bale has built his career on this type of intense commitment. From the emaciated Machinist to the bulky Bruce Wayne, his willingness to endure extremes has solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most dedicated performers.
And for many fans, he remains the Batman.
